What is structured EAP
counselling?
Structured counselling is a series of therapy sessions provided to employees as part of the overall EAP service to address personal, emotional, or work-related issues that are affecting their wellbeing or performance at work. This higher level of support is recommended for employees who are experiencing longer-term or more severe mental health challenges and are really struggling to cope, or are having to take lots of time off work sick to rest and recover. Structured EAP counselling sessions usually take place over a number of weeks to explore issues on a much deeper level than a one-off session, with the aim of developing coping strategies and improving quality of life.
Why it matters
As well as providing immediate, confidential support to the individual, the EAP helpline also brings many benefits for the business:
• Higher productivity: helps employees manage stress or personal challenges, allowing them to focus and feel happier, more resilient, and engaged with work tasks.
• Reduced absenteeism: giving employees the tools to actively address and improve their mental health before they reach the point of crisis and have to take time off.
• Lower turnover: employees who feel properly supported are likely to stay within the business for longer, have higher job satisfaction, and are less likely to quit as a result of poor mental health.
How does it work?
Spill’s structured EAP counselling is a fully confidential service that provides longer-term support and guidance for employees dealing with severe mental health challenges. Employees will be referred on for extended support by your dedicated company counsellor, and matched with a specialist who has the most relevant experience to their specific situation (e.g. a specialised bereavement or grief counsellor). A course of treatment is typically 6-12 sessions long. The employee will speak with the same person in each session, and usually meet once a week for the duration. This format has been around since the invention of talk therapy in the early 19th century by Freud, and to this day remains the most effective way to support somebody who is really struggling with their mental health.
